Study Title: Exploring the predictive relationship between climate anxiety, nature connectedness, and emotional intelligence on an individual’s pro-environmental behaviour.
Student researcher: Angela Davies
I would like to invite you to take part in my research study. Before you decide if you would like to consider taking part, I would like you to understand why the research is being done and what it would involve for you. I will be happy to discuss the study with you and answer any questions you have or clarify anything as needed.
What is the purpose of the research?
The purpose of this study is to explore how climate change, nature connectedness, and emotional intelligence are related to a person's pro-environmental behaviour.
Why have I been invited to participate? You have been invited to take part in this study as you are an adult (over the age of 18 years old). I am seeking participants from all backgrounds to explore how feelings about climate anxiety, emotional intelligence and nature connectedness relate to their pro-environmental behaviour. Participants are required to have a basic understanding of English and reading comprehension.
Do I have to take part? No, your participation is completely voluntary. You can withdraw at any point during the study, without giving a reason and with no consequences. You can also withdraw your information up to two weeks after taking part. If you decide you want to withdraw your data from this study, please contact me using the contact details provided. Data will be anonymised using a unique code. The unique code will be created using the first three letters of your surname, followed by the last three digits of your phone number e.g. STA909. You will need to provide the researcher with your unique code to withdraw your data.
What will happen to me if I take part?
If you decide to take part, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire. The study should take approximately ten to fifteen minutes. The questionnaire starts with some basic demographic questions, then moves on to questions relating to your feelings about climate change, your emotional skills, your pro-environmental behaviours and the extent to which you feel connected to nature. The information will be confidential and used only for research purposes.
Expenses and payments? There are no payments for participating in this study. Students at the University of Derby will receive 2 participation points.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part? There are no anticipated risks to participating in this study. Some of the questions are about climate anxiety and could potentially cause some distress. You are free to stop and withdraw at any time during completion of the questionnaires. Please see a list of support services at the end of this study should you become distressed by any of the topics in this study.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no personal benefits to taking part in this study; however, your participation will contribute to psychological research on nature connectedness. The findings from this research could contribute to research to understanding how people's sense of nature connection relates to people's emotional skills and environmental feelings and behaviours, which could inform future education and interventions.
